Published on December 28th, 2012 by Kieran 22 Configuring Outlook.com and Outlook for Mac 2011 Recently I was asked if I have configured Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 with Outlook.com. So similar to my post, here is how I did it. Microsoft have made no secret that they are trying to transition users from Hotmail to their new Outlook.com mail system. Therefore these instructions are for configuring Outlook 2011 to work with your new @Outlook.com email account. Microsoft have done all the work for you and once you enter your email address Outlook 2011, should configure the rest for you you. Just in case your settings are not applied, here are the settings that I found to work with my @Outlook.com address. Incoming Server: pop3.live.com Port: 995 Override Default Port: unchecked Use SSL to connect (recommended): checked Always use secure password: unchecked Outgoing Server: smtp.live.com Port: 587 Override Default Port: checked Use SSL to connect (recommended): checked Step by Step Here are the steps required to configure Outlook 2011 to work with your Outlook.com email account.

Open Outlook 2011. Click Tools Accounts. Click Add an Account or click Add and then click Email. When presented with the Enter your account information simply enter your @outlook.com or @hotmail.com email address, enter your password and click Add Account. Outlook 2011 should then automatically enter the server information for you. Once you close the Accounts menu, Outlook 2011 should start a send / receive and your messages should start to download.
Kieran – is there not supposed to be a way to configure Outlook 2011 for Mac with your outlook.com account as an exchange account? I’ve done this easily on my iPhone & iPad, and it was my understanding that it could be done on Outlook for Mac, but it just won’t have it – it comes up with the following error message: ‘Account cannot be added. Note that Outlook 2011 requires Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Update Rollup 4 or later’ Surely the outlook.com exchange server is not out of date. Seems bizarre that I can only have it as a pop3 account on my big machines when my mobile devices are all singing all dancing. Appreciate any help you can give.
Hi Guys Thanks so much for all the feedback. I have been doing some more research and the “Add Exchange Account” mechanism for Outlook 2011 will work for Office 365 for professionals and small businesses, Office 365 for enterprises, Microsoft Exchange, accounts only. In the above example, I am using a free Outlook.com / Live.com email address. When I try using the “Add Exchange Account” method it tries to use autodiscover.xml for both Outlook.com and Hotmail.com, and for my account it returns “XML Parsing Error: no element found”. To verify I have tried to using “Add Exchange Account” with my Office 365 and it works perfectly. So it could be an issue with @outlook.com email address or in fact a limitation of the free @outlook.com service.
As Tony says, it such a pity because it works beautifully with my iPhone and iPad. It’s a pity microsoft have limited outlook.com as an exchange service to mobile iOS devices only (works perfectly on windows 7&8 of course.) I suppose the thinking is that they had no choice if they wanted Hotmail/Outlook to be used on iOS devices – using hotmail/outlook.com as a pop only service on a mobile is a terrible experience and just pushes you to genuinely integrated services like google/yahoo/icloud etc! Why MS doesn’t bite the bullet and give exchange to any mac device beats me – I suppose it’s an attempt to upsell users to Office 365 and stop commercial users going for a free product. Makes commerical sense in the short term but ultimately short changes “free” customers who’ll switch out when they realise changing email address is no longer a big deal. @nicki g: Sorrybut you’re misstating something that could confuse readers here.
Outlook.com syncs with iOS devices using Exchange Active Sync (EAS) and give you 100% PUSH for email, contacts, and calendar (even reminders, if you use them in Outlook.com). I’ve used Gmail since the week it launched, and have also used Google Apps since it launched. With Google’s recent “slap in the face” that stopped Google Sync for new iOS devices, I gladly pulled the plug on them. I’ve been a geek for a lot of years and have to tell you I couldn’t be happier with Outlook.com.
It’s simple, elegant, as fast as any web app can be (depends on your computer & bandwidth), and for email, contacts and calendarit works great. The calendar interface is the only piece that still old Hotmail technology, but it’s not that badand Microsoft says they’re working on a new UI for it. So, just to clarify Outlook.com accounts can ONLY be set up as POP/SMTP in Outlook 2011 on the Mac? EAS / Hotmail type accounts cannot be set up in Outlook 2011 on the Mac?
This is really unfortunately, since Outlook.com’s POP service prevents you from checking your e-mail more than a few times during a 15 minute period. This means that business users simply cannot use the service on a Mac, as far as I can tell, because there’s no way most business users will be ok checking their mail every 10 or 15 minutes.

Many of the customers I work with are currently making their way through an Office 365 technical pilot that needs to include Mac OS X machines as well as various versions of Windows. The Windows stuff seems fairly well documented and since we now have a GA release of Lync 2011 for Mac OS X I thought I would write a post about using OS X with Office 365 Note: Most of this is documented on the following page, however it does not include Lync or any screenshots. Software requirements for Mac OS X and Office 365 There are some things that you need to know before rushing out to connect your Max OS X machines to Office 365. Firstly you will need a version of Outlook that supports Exchange Web Services (EWS). Older versions of Outlook for Mac used WebDAV which is not provided in Exchange Server 2010 and therefore is also not available in Office 365. From my limited experience it works really well, I have a customer with more than 500 Mac's running Lync 2011 against Office 365. The most common problem that I see with Mac's is with certficates, i.e customer has chosen to use internal CA to provide their ADFS certificate and not installed the root CA certificate chain onto the Mac the other really common problem is where the UPN does not match the SMTP name, this causes a huge amount of end user confusion, remember that if you are using ADFS you need to login with your UPN not your SMTP name (They are not necessarily the same!).
As a test I often try to use a managed account to bypass the ADFS infrastructure, i.e use one of your @.onmicrosoft.com acccounts to test Lync before trying a federated account. If you are really struggling then call support – thats what they are there for 🙂. We don't have ADFS running, so our users are created straight in 365. Still doesn't work, and we're not alone by the sound of it.
Outlook 2011 For Mac Update
Login and email are identical, can log in using Lync 2010 just fine. Tried the.onmicrosoft.com thing as well with no luck. I'm betting there is a bug here. Someone said they were watching network traffic and the Lync 2011 client would start looking at their internal AD then time out. There is no reason it should be doing that on a cloud based service.

Again, Microsoft should have thought about a more open beta like is typical rather than releasing something and creating confusion or forcing us to call support. BTW: some are saying that 365 is not ready for Lync 2011 yet.
Again, why would there be a client release if this were the case, and it sure seems to be working for you. I called 365 support today on this. I was told the official word is Lync 2011 for Mac does NOT work with 365. They are aware that web sites and product documentations state that it does, but it does not. They said they were working on this but could not tell me when something would be released. They indicated it might be a separate client. This feels like a bait and switch on customers who were promised this service, not communicated that it would not work, and not being given an ETA on availability.
How the author of this blog was able to connect and states he knows others who are is confusing at best. I'd like to understand if this is some kind of pre-release software or if indeed its on prem Lync that is being used. I have a purchased copy of Office 2011 for the Mac, and the Office365 E3 plan. Office365 advertises Lync as one of the benefits it offers. HOWEVER, I don't have Lync, as it was not included in MS Office 2011, and I cannot find it available as a download. How are we supposed to get it? I tried downloading the update version, but because it cannot find a previous version installed, it won't install.
Neil – can you help? Any recommendations??? I have contacted support, and one of the things they did was refer me to this link!!!!
