Mac Hard Drive Replacement
My Problem I had a 250GB SSD as ordered from Apple. Needed more space.
Decided to add a Crucial 1TB drive in the bottom bay. My Fix I had bought another drive cable online and it didn't work at all. Sorry I didn't go with IFixIt. The IFixIt cable worked perfectly. Now if I could only get the Mac (Disk Utility) to build the new SSD from the BU Time Machine. Keeps failing.
I tried reboot with Option/Cmd/R and just Cmd/R to try and rebuild but nothing is working so far. I will continue the quest to slay the dragon. My Advice Go with IFix IT in the first place.
Get what you pay for. Something that works and lots of advice online. My Problem Boot camp was being a little troublesome with just the stock drive.
Certainly enough space, but after upgrading to High Sierra OS/X was getting a little more finicky than usual with the whole dedicated bootcamp partitioning thing. After having tried a few other more conventional things, DVD drives refined, etc, I figured I'd install a whole second drive, formatted as MBR, for Windows (7). Works well and OS/X and Windows don't trod on each other. (As a last caveat, Windows on first physical volume) My Fix Excellently. I don't always 'spring' for tools since I have my share (and I quoted spring because cost was quite reasonable), but I am glad I did.
Everything was there so I could go through the process without having to get up and hunt for tools, etc. All I needed to provide myself was a little bit of table space to set up so I could lay out the removed parts. Plus the tools, detail things like the 'spudger' / pusher thingy, were seemingly innocuous at first but super nice to have on hand.
Dual Hard Drive Flex Cable For Macbook Pro 13
Attention to detail in the kit is stellar, and keeps the flow of the repair so smooth I was really impressed and enjoyed the experience all the more. My Advice Not that isn't already in the guide. Precise, crystal clear documentation and standardized hardware, there wasn't a single moment-of-toughness or gotcha spot in the whole thing. My Problem 500GB spinning disk became a performance bottleneck after switching Mac Mini from server duty to desktop duty. I purchased the dual drive kit for the flexibility of adding a second SSD down the road. But for now, the single drive setup suits my needs perfectly. My Fix I'm writing this review on the Mac Mini with a new Samsung 850 EVO SSD.
So, it went well! My Advice Take your time as there are a lot of small delicate components. Some people say this can be done without having to move the logic board assembly (slightly) out of the case. I was not able to accomplish this. But I think I only moved the logic board about 1cm to obtain the clearance needed to perform the drive swap. I also used the opportunity with the case open and many parts removed to grab some canned air and clean out about 7 years worth of dust.
My Problem No problems but, we replaced our old WD externel drive that started to get noisy with a new Synology TS-251 2-bay NAS external unit and a Seagate 4TB IronWolf NAS SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive and thus wanted to have the old Mac Mini updated as well and installed a new Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III and will pair with an old 500Gb Seagate HDD using raid1. My Fix Replacement of the MacMini HDD with the SSD went very well and is up and running wit our new Synology system. My Advice If you don't really need to replace your external drive you should wait for SSD prices to fall; they probably will within the near future due to technology and competition.
