She has three children: Elon, a founder of PayPal and Tesla; Tosca, a filmmaker; and Kimbal, a founder of, a nonprofit that builds gardens in schools. Below, she discusses her modeling trajectory, her decision to stop dyeing her hair, nutrition and eating disorders in the industry, and her family. How did you feel when you found out you would be?
I just love that CoverGirl wants to do diversity. They haven’t had a model this old in their campaigns. I’m turning 70 in April of next year.
I think that women will be really inspired to see that even at 69 you can get a beauty campaign. Aging has been good for me. You develop confidence, you’re able to handle the knocks a little easier.
I model for my age. I’m not trying to hide it and say I’m 50. I’m so proud that I’m going be 70. I don’t dye my hair. It’s so fabulous. I had brown hair for so long. I was always getting my roots done.
Sometimes I did it myself because I couldn’t afford to go to a hair salon. When I turned 60, I decided to see what color I am underneath. I started dyeing my hair a very light blond and then I let it grow out. I cut it very short.
When did you first start modeling? I was a science nerd. I have two science degrees. I enjoyed the sciences, nutrition, so I always modeled part time, thinking it would end.
And it hasn’t, of course. “Just getting started” is my hashtag. I had three kids in three years, so that slowed me down somewhat. I was 28 and the oldest model in the city. What advice would you give to young models today? Be nice to everybody.
Keep your brain active. Did you ever involve your kids in your modeling work?
When I didn’t have a nanny, the shows weren’t long, so they would have their books and sit in the front row. I tried to get them to model, but they found it boring. They didn’t have iPads back then.
When you’re on set you stand a lot and you wait, wait, wait. Tosca was doing runway with me and she was about 11, and they did her hair in a style she hated and she refused to step on the runway. And I said, “That’s the end of your modeling career.” And that was fine with me, too. What do you love about makeup? For me, it makes a huge difference because my face is pretty plain, and I’m very fair with very few eyebrows and very short eyelashes. Makeup transforms me.
I feel like I’m in disguise when I walk my dog without makeup on. I was 12 or 13 when I started experimenting. At 15, I was modeling. I had to do my own hair and makeup. I also made my own clothes because I grew up in South Africa, where fashion was six months behind because of the seasons.
We wore a lot of makeup. It took us an hour to get ready.
The eyelashes on top, the black eyeliner in the crease of the eye that you can see in photos from the ‘60s, the beehive hairstyle. The modeling industry has a lot of issues with eating disorders and underweight workers. What’s your perspective on that as someone who studies nutrition? There are models who are naturally skinny, but the thing is that many of them are emaciated. You can tell because they have hirsutism. There’ll be some hair on their face.

It’s to protect their body and keep it warm because they’re too skinny. They also don’t have good energy.
I’m surprised how many of them can do so many shows. Modeling agencies would send me their models. If they were a swimsuit model, they would have to lose 10 pounds to do runway. I would say, “You’re perfect. You don’t need to lose weight.” They would say, “But I have to lose 10 pounds to do couturier work.” I would say, “You have to eat perfectly. You have to keep your energy, and you can’t look gaunt or tired.
You can’t share pizza with your friends, you can’t have alcohol, you can’t have dessert.” That’s hard for young girls. About a year ago I walked for Malan Breton, who found me on Facebook. I’ve walked for Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Eileen Fisher.
Not fashion week. They weren’t looking for women around 70. I hope it’s a larger change happening. People are living longer and enjoying their lives more and know they don’t have to disappear at 65 when they retire. I will never retire. My mom never retired.
I’ll work until no one wants me anymore, and then I’ll find something else and I’ll still be a dietitian doing nutrition research, which I love. Have you gotten a yet?
I haven’t gotten the 3 yet. I’m at around 300,000. Even though I have good connections, I can’t jump the line.
Ulta hasn’t quite gotten my memo about how I hate unicorns and I wish death to all unicorns on the planet. The makeup world has ruined all things unicorn for me (especially you Tarte!
You’re the most guilty of all for ruining all the things unicorn for me! Legend is ruined for me!
Anyway, Ulta hasn’t obviously not read my memo on unicorns and has been trying to convince me to dye my hair with Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Semi-Permanent Hair Color Tint for the past year. I dunno why, I dunno how, I don’t understand, I don’t get it but I have gotten at least five free samples of Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Semi-Permanent Hair Color Tint in the past year with my Ulta online orders. But the most insulting thing of all is my most recent order when Ulta shipped me a sample of Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Semi-Permanent Hair Color Tint. I have two friends from abroad currently staying with me which makes my house feel like a sorority.
Lots of giggling, lots of bad snacks, and lots of beauty. I don’t have a lot of friends in my real life that are into makeup and beauty.
Most of my friends have like one lipstick and think I’m seriously weird for have dozens! I mean, I have all of you guys that love skincare, makeup, etc! But we are so far apart from each other it’s not like we hang out and enjoy brunch on Sunday together sadly. However, these two friends adore beauty!
One of them loves fragrance which I can talk about all day, everyday! The other is really into skincare! I recently purchased one of the new and in my haste and excitement to check out I unintentionally purchased two of the same palette. Don’t ask me how I did it but I somehow checked out with two of the same exact palette in my cart. No biggie though! Sephora is brilliant with returns so, when I got my box in the mail and realized my mistake I went to the store with my receipt and proceeded to request a return. I have to admit I don’t return a lot of stuff.
Things tend to get chucked into my a lot as I do have the best intention of returning something I might not like but I’m so busy sometimes months will go and it seems way too late to return it. I think it’s bad for retail and also, I should have been smarter prior to ordering and thought about whether I really needed it and what I already know about the formula and has the brand been disappointing in the past formula-wise etc! Another words, research prior to purchasing is a smart way to avoid returns. And finally I have return anxiety. I always get the worst sales rep when I return something that ends up giving me a snarky attitude for daring to ruin their day by returning something! Not to mention I’m typically treated like a complete criminal for returning an item.
Sure, I have a receipt that I did indeed purchase it but 99% of the time I’m treated like I don’t have the receipt and in reality just grabbed that item off the shelf, ran out the door with it, and came back a few weeks later to return the stolen item. Returns aren’t fun. None the less, I had no use for two of the same eyeshadow palette so away I went on my way to Sephora to return it and I was offered $1.56. ($45) arrived at Sephora yesterday and as tempting as it is to dump a bunch of it into a bowl and serve it with chips you might want to smear it on your face instead! Allow me to digress for a second. Do you eat your weight in guacamole or am I the only guac addict? But anyway, Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask might sound tasty but please don’t eat it!
This creamy sleeping mask was created with yummy things like honey and avocado that act to moisturizer dry, dull skin overnight. Anyone can use it! Dry, oily, combo, it’s a perfect mask to heal skin over to reveal brighter, firmer, and more hydrated skin! I dunno if it works but it sure does sound yummy! Maybe I’ll try it out and see how it goes. Worst case scenario I can use it in my next guac recipe! It’s available now at Sephora.
I’m so happy to be back to normal blogging! Those sales really exhausted me! Did you score anything awesome over the long weekend or yesterday during Cyber Monday? Let me know whatcha got!
